About Blue Bell, PA
Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, is located in Whitpain Township in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Blue Bell proper is a census-designated place with a population of just over 6,000 and an area of approximately 5½ square miles. Blue Bell was originally named Pigeontown and its famous inn, The White House, was established in 1743 to accommodate hunters who traveled to the area on hunting excursions. Some 50 years later, the name of the inn changed to the Blue Bell Inn to reflect a distinct blue bell that sat atop the inn. Another 50 years later, the locals changed the name of the town from Pigeontown to Blue Bell. The inn continues operational today as a popular restaurant and is an area establishment that can lay claim that George Washington slept there during the Revolutionary War, as he did in late 1777 after establishing headquarters nearby.
